LOT 1A – V190

We first noticed V190 as a young calf on his super dam Dulverton Wilcoola P195, he exhibited the special qualities and presence we demand in a calf we would want to use. At weaning we were totally convinced of his destiny, we separated he and half a dozen others from their management group giving them nutritional assistance to be sure they would weigh five hundred (500) kilos by October, our designated breeding month. V190’s Igenity Beef Profile (IBP) for the Calving Ease Traits suggested he would be heifer safe (BW 4; CED 7; CEM 8) so he was sent to “mop up” a group of 47 A.I’d. “V” heifers. V190 nor the A.I. technician let the side down, that particular mob of heifers tested 92% pregnant to the A.I. and two cycles with V190.

The structural soundness shown by V190 is exemplary. Dick Whale graded him a 7+ (don’t see many 7+’s), his feet, legs and mobility are major strengths. Dick has scored V190 24’s for both front and back feet, don’t see Dick awarding many 24’s for front feet. V190’s mobility is a definite strength, check out the hock action, just so flexed and free. It’s always a pleasure to see that flex in the hock with V190’s expressive depth in the heel. Too often adequate heel depth is associated with too straight a back leg, a negative for free movement and longevity re serving cows.  V190 has our preferred bone content, it’s not too powerful yet strong enough to ensure he carries his Mass and sufficient enough to indicate adequate constitution. V190’s flatter bone pattern is an indicator of the fact that he has the potential to improve saleable beef yields. V190’s pelvic set up, which includes wide set thurl and pin bones plus the all important “Roll” from hip to pin, supports his IBP prediction for calving ease.

It’s our contention that V190 has ample scope to be used in a bull breeding herd. He has an ideal frame pattern to breed bulls to go out into the commercial industry to breed feeder steers capable of fulfilling the required 350 to 400kg carcass weight from a 150 day feeding program, with 3/4 score marbling and adequate carcass yields. Dick Whale’s visual muscle score which places him at the top end of B minus muscling, supports the preferred carcass yields. V190 has all the necessary physical attributes to support the fact that he will also be very capable of breeding sons capable of going into commercial herds to also breed replacement females, his doing ability score of 33 supports this dual purpose role.

PEDIGREE

V190 is by Clunie Range Ridgeback R762. R762 has bred well at Dulverton, his best son from last years draft was purchased by Blair & Josie Angus, Dulverton Universal U197, he registered the highest VDI for the draft, a 74, including a 9 for Marbling, the same score as V190. Blair and Josie are absolutely committed to breeding, rearing and supplying beef that also achieves our Mission which is “To provide beef to the consumer that satisfies their eating quality expectations consistently and price competitively”.

Ridgeback R762 traces back to two of Farrer Agricultural High School’s foundation cows in Tiawalla Naomi T6 and Calleen Kathleen T35., both gifted by those Studs. It’s a real Buzz for Sal & I to have been re-united with cows who made Farrer Angus a possibility. No doubting Farrer Naomi N8 a daughter of T. Naomi T6, was the stand out homebred cow at Farrer during those early formative years.

V190’s maternal pedigree is “powered “ by Dulverton Larry L154, amazingly the first ten Lots of this “V” Sale Bull catalogue are all structurally extremely sound, they have Graded 7’s. Four of these bulls have Dulverton Larry L154 in their maternal pedigree, they are Lot 1A V190; Lot 3 V88 (also recommended as a potential stud Sire); Lot 7 V274 and Lot 10 V260. The “P” dams of these bulls are all still active in the herd and have each weaned six (6) progeny. It’s ten (10) years since James and Ted Laurie of Team Knowla purchased Dulverton Larry L154 from our “L” Draft Sale, they too were taken by his structural prowess.

Two cows who can certainly lay claim to adding maternal longevity to V190’s performance record, appear on the bottom side of his maternal pedigree , they include Dulverton Wilcoola D151, reared ten (10) and Dulverton Wilcoola B159 reared twelve (12). B159 was by the champion homebred sire Dulverton Uptake U91 who was still breeding by natural service as an eleven (11) year old.

GENETIC PERFORMANCE AND THE IGENITY BEEF PROFILE

V190’s Genetic Performance as measured by the Igenity Beef Profile (IBP) can almost be described as Superior, The Dulverton Value Determining Index has him registering a score of 69.5. The Dulverton requirement is for a score of seventy (70) prior to a potential sire being recognised as Superior and therefore a worthwhile addition to The Sire Battery. So close and yet so far. Team Dulverton was happy to use V190 in The Stud herd because he does excel for the major Value Determining Traits outlined below and because he is such an outstanding Physical Type (remember he does Grade 7+), with a powerful Maternal pedigree, structural soundness and longevity built in.

1) Calving Ease, scores include BW 4; CED 7 & CEM 8
2) Stayability, scores 7
3) Eating Quality, scores include Tenderness 10 & Marbling 9
4) Carcass Weight, scores 8

The Value Determining Index for D. Vow & Declare V190 is calculated as follows-:

Team Dulverton has purposely not included Growth in the VDI yet a watching brief is maintained, we don’t like to see too many individuals registering below “7” for  the growth numbers. Carcass Weight is included in The VDI with 8’s and 9’s being the preferred scores, it’s hard to get Carcass weight scores of 8 without adequate growth.

Dulverton Vow & Declare V190 is a definite future Bull Breeding prospect, he has been used by Team Dulverton and will produce in the order of twenty five (25) calves from a set of “V” heifers at Dulverton.

V190 fulfills the three requirements Team Dulverton set prior to admitting a potential young sire into the Bull Battery

  • Structural Soundness
  • A Superior Maternal Pedigree which in V190’S case includesthe two gifted foundation dams to FARRER, Tiawalla Naomi T6 and Calleen Kathleen T35 plus Dulverton Larry L154
  • A Genetic profile of highly commendable status, VDI 69.5
