Calving Ease has long been a priority within The Dulverton Herd. Please be reminded, it goes without saying that any calf assisted at birth is automatically culled, so too the dam and the sire deleted from the Roster.
The Team acknowledges Calving Ease genetically as well. Calving Ease Maternal has a ten percent (10%) weighting in the Value Determining Index (VDI). Stayability has a twenty five (25%) weighting in the VDI. Remember STAY is about a heifer remaining in the herd as a productive cow until at least six years of age.To be productive that heifer/cow must produce a live calf every year.
Paul Jameson and David Payne two of the superior Farrer Beef Cattle Husbandry Students in the Late 1970’s often still remind me of Dr. Rex Butterfields now famous “Take” on Calving Ease
“DEAD CALVES HAVE DISTRESSINGLY POOR GROWTH RATES”

The Bulls represented in Columns 1, 2, & 3 are considered The Safest of the suggested Heifer Safe Group. Those Bulls in column 4 are considered Heifer Safe provided a program is in place that has sorted each individual heifer, weight, shape sire group etc.
Lots 1, 3, & 4 used in Stud over heifers.
